Best Children and Yound Adult Books

  • James Joyce's book of poems titled Chamber Music was released by Elkin Mathews in May 1907. There were originally thirty-four love poems in the anthology, but two more were added before it was published ("All day I hear the noise of waters" and "I hear an army charging upon the land"). Although it is widely believed that the title refers to the sound of urine tinkling in a chamber pot, this is a later Joycean embellishment that gives an earthiness to a title that was initially proposed by his brother Stanislaus and that Joyce (by the time of publication) had come to dislike: "The reason I dislike Chamber Music as a title is that it is too complacent," he admitted to Arthur Symons in 1906. "I would prefer a title that criticized the work while avoiding outright trashing it." Chamber Music's poetry isn't at all racy or evocative of the sound of tinkling urine, in fact. The poems were well-received by critics despite poor sales (less than half of the original print run of 500 had been sold in the first year).
  • The Fairy Land of Science : If your primary goal is to succeed in the world, you may utilize science primarily to achieve academic success or pass tests, but if you want to understand nature better, you will study it for other reasons as well. Take a miniature globe, place a piece of black plaster over England, place a lit lamp in place of the sun, and gently rotate the globe so that it totally reflects the lamp's light. In reality, sunbeams are a series of small, fast waves that flow from the sun to us over an unseen medium known as "ether," constantly bombarding anything that gets in their path. In highly polished, reflective metal, waves barely ever penetrate at all but are instead projected out off the surface; as a result, objects like a steel knife or a silver spoon are extremely brilliant and easy to notice. Statuary yards are so named because they house the creations of sculptors who have carved statues from granite, marble, and other types of stone into a variety of diverse forms. However, at the workshop where the sculptor is working, you can see that he has managed to carve pictures that resemble live things out of rough stone blocks.
  • Through the Brazilian Wilderness : When the boat departed, Zahm's wife and four children flew in from New York to bid him farewell. The American Museum was especially eager to acquire items from the region separating the Amazon River's southern affluents from its headwaters in Paraguay. The majority of colubrine snakes, which are the typical snakes we encounter everywhere, are completely harmless. However, certain snakes, like cobras, grow into what are generally thought to be the most dangerous snakes. On Christmas Day, we made steady progress upstream between upper Paraguay's lush and picturesque banks while fighting a strong current. The low, marshy, rich wastelands known as the Chaco were to the west across the river and were still occupied by either wild Indians or massive-scale cattle ranching. Our entire group, together with all of their baggage, boarded our fine small river boat, the Nyoac, at Corumba. The Amazon River, which flows from the Andes to the Atlantic from west to east, is the largest river in the world. A train of pack oxen left two days before our own departure with our mule train, hauling supplies, equipment, and other items. Most of them were thoroughly broken, but there was around a score that was either completely unbroken or horribly shattered.
  • The Great Big Treasury of Beatrix Potter is just what it sounds like—a treasure trove of wonderful, endearing small tales featuring both people and animals. Beatrix Potter has today given rise to a huge industry of toys, games, and theme parks, yet the stories are still as new and exciting as they were in 1901. The Giant Treasury of Peter Rabbit, Further Tales of Peter Rabbit, and The Giant Treasury of Beatrix Potter are three volumes that have been combined into one magical volume called The Great Big Treasury. Along with his virtuous sisters Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail, Peter Rabbit is the protagonist of numerous stories. He is a naughty and rebellious little boy. While Mr. McGregor's alluring garden is brimming with delectable fruits and vegetables, their patient mother works tirelessly to keep Peter out of trouble. Old Mrs. Rabbit warns her children not to enter the garden because their father had an accident there in one of Beatrix Potter's humorous lines found in the books. He was baked inside a pie! Other noteworthy characters include the impolite Squirrel Nutkin, Benjamin Bunny, the cousin of Peter Rabbit, two evil mice named Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and Tailor Simpkin, a frog named Mr. Jeremy Fisher, and many others.
